What To Wear.....

Your style of working attire makes a tremendous difference to the type of clientele you'll attract.

Dressing in an elegant, feminine way will attract a different type of client than say,
a tight, skimpy revealing dress in fire-engine red!

Too many girls don't put enough thought into what they're wearing, then complain constantly that the only clients they're getting is the leftovers from the local pub.

The most successful ladies I've had the pleasure of working with all presented themselves beautifully.
Several of them had found a particular dress that looked amazing on them, and bought it in different colours!

Another great idea is to wade through all the second hand clothing stores you can find, you'll be amazed at the number of gorgeous things you can pick up if you look hard enough.

Also remember that if you're planning on doing outcalls, (visiting with a client at their home, hotel etc) you'll also need to have an outfit or two that is simple, stylish and warm to wear. (Most clientele prefer that you don't arrive at their door looking like a cheap slapper :) It is also a good idea to have a small bag to take condoms etc in, and a mobile phone.

Here are some ideas:

This is a great example of an outfit suitable for an evening shift in an upmarket establishment. Elegant, formal, feminine and is a great colour.

You might find dresses like this on a day shift in an upmarket place.

In an average Parlour, you'll see alot of this type of dress.

If you're shopping for working clothes, always remember to TRY ON the things you like BEFORE you buy them:
just because you've seen a certain dress look fabulous on someone else,
it doesn't mean the same dress is going to look good on YOU.....

Other things you might want to consider taking with you if you're working in a Parlour -

A warm cozy jacket
enough money for petrol/cab-fare home in case you don't get a booking
Some reading material
Bottled water
Playing cards
A sample of your fave music if the place accommodates personal choice music
Your sense of humour :)
Some healthy snacks to graze on

So what really goes on in a brothel?

Following is some general information about what to expect if you're considering:
working in an established Parlour.

*Please note that this info is based on MY experiences in Australia and New Zealand, and is my opinion only.
You may find conditions to be different, depending on the management of a particular place.*

In a usual environment, there will be a receptionist or manager onsite who takes phone calls, greets clients as they arrive, and also collect the clients money, either directly from the client or from you.

Working girls are usually expected to remain in a "dressing room" or girls lounge untill a client arrives.

Depending on the policies of the parlour and the laws in your area, these dressing rooms can be crowded, messy and usually filled with ciggarette smoke as a great deal of girls chainsmoke while waiting around bored.

You will usually be expected to arrive half an hour before your shift starts, to ensure you are ready for presentation to clientele.

Dress codes vary from place to place, but the general rules are to wear something feminine and flattering. It is also a good idea not to go out and buy a whole load of outfits in the same colour - there is nothing worse than seeing a group of working girls all dressed in black, you are not at a funeral!

Inquire before you start if the parlour organises "food runs" for the girls, or if you're expected to bring something with you, as most places frown upon girls leaving the premises in the middle of a shift to get something to eat.

All registered brothels are required by law to provide you with condoms, lubricants, tissues etc, so unless your preference is for a specific brand, you won't have to bring your own.

You will usually be shown the "correct way" of remaking your room after a client visit, some places are extremely pedantic about getting it right, (especially if girls are sharing the same rooms) and you'll hear nothing but whinging if you don't! *also make sure you check to make sure there arn't dirty condoms and tissues left in the room for the next arrival to see, it gives clients the impression that the establishment isn't hygienic, and are well within their rights to complain.

The procedure for being introduced to clients differ from place to place, but these are the usual introduction methods- *You wait in the dressing room, and are called out separately to introduce yourself *You wait in the dressing room untill a client arrives and then are all called out at the same time for the client to "view" (this is called a "line-up"and is the most disliked introduction according to girls and clientele I've encountered) *All the girls on shift are free to wait in the main lounge (or bar if there is one) until a client arrives and is able to "mingle" with the girls untill he/she feels comfortable in making the right choice.

Normally the policy for discussing your clientele with other girls, is "Don't". This is an absolutely riduculous rule, and creates a dangerous environment to work in! Girls will ALWAYS pass on relevant information to each other, it's how we "bond". It is necessary to share your experiences particularly of difficult, pushy, or violent clients; remeber knowledge is power. You have the right to refuse to visit with a client you know to be difficult, in fact you have a right to not visit with ANY client you don't want to for any reason at all. If your management forces or coerces you against your will to perform any duties, they are breaking the Law, and can be convicted accordingly.
It is important to ask BEFORE you agree to start work in any place how your income is handled. For example I worked in a slightly dodgy place in Sydney years back where you had to work a minimum of 4 shifts, and your money wasn't given back to you untill leaving on the last one. THIS IS BLACKMAIL. Make sure that if you are handing YOUR money over to the care of a receptionist/manager, that they give it BACK to you at the end of the SAME shift.

I expect you might be wondering exactly what my experience is?

well, I've checked my memory banks and from that information I've compiled a list of some of the places I've worked, and what they were REALLY like......

Maison D'Amour - Parramatta & Seven Hills, Sydney (closed)

This place was a great start for me. It was located in an old refurbished townhouse right in the middle of Parramatta.
The manager was Female, and used to be a sexworker herself so she was always on hand for advice & support. The other girls working there were all very friendly and always encouraged to be supportive of one another, and we often entertained ourselves with a whole heap of sillyness on the quiet days!
The Manager organized all of our health check-ups from a sexual health clinic which visited the Parlour 2 days a month so we didn't have to "go out of our way" to have our check-ups.
This Parlour provided evrything we needed to be comfortable, including a cooked meal when on shift.
It is a real shame that Parlours like this don't seem to exist anymore.....

Studio 43 - St Mary's, Sydney

This place was decidedly dodgy! I worked here on reception for about 2 months, before being encouraged to perform other services as they had only 3 girls working there. I was not happy about this, but at the time I really needed the cash so I jumped into a dual-role, until the place hit rockbottom and was only catering to drunks and junkies. eeewww.
Thank heavens it closed before someone got seriously hurt!

Studio 9 - St. Mary's, Sydney

This place was, if you havn't already guessed, linked to Studio 43.
But unlike it's partner, Studio 9 was supposed to be a massage-only place, which I thought would give me more experience in that particular area.
But the rules were very pliable, and encouragement was given constantly to perform full services, often for only $30 extra!!
I resisted the offer numerous times, so my clientele started to decline as they realised that I wasn't offering myself up so cheaply.

Claudia's Penthouse - 2 locations- Parramatta & Top Ryde, Sydney

I joined Claudia's at the Parramatta branch, but found myself not really comfortable there. The security wasn't all that great, the other girls working there were nearly all drug-users, and the spa was only cleaned every 3 days! yuk.
Within 3 weeks I moved to the Top Ryde branch, where security was better. The Manager, Rick, although not female, was friendly and supportive, most of the girls had "day jobs" and enjoyed a bit of a drink instead of taking drugs, and the clientele were mostly professional people.
I stayed on here for 10 months.
I enjoyed my time @ Top Ryde, it was a nice clean place with nice people too :) .

Golden Girls - Homebush, Sydney - closed?
Not exactly a classy place, but it had all the requirements.....
The rooms were quite big here, but the heating wasn't that great!
When I started there, most of the other girls had been there for awhile, and I found it hard to make friends because as with most parlours, they didn't appreciate more competition!
But I gritted my teeth through the whispered insults and whinging for 2 months untill I made the money I needed to make and got outta there!
Working here was a lonely experience, one I'd never wish upon anyone.

The Penthouse - Pitt St, Sydney central - http://www.thepenthouse.com.au

This place is definately your more up-market establishment, very classy surroundings, great rooms, and very tight security.
The downside? 12 hour shifts with up to 30 girls per shift, so competition is fierce!
Be prepared for meeting high standards as far as your appearance goes - if you're not up to scratch, you won't be allowed "on the floor" and you'll be fined for it too.
The girls here spend a fortune on beauty treatments, clothing and makeup - and some never make that money back, they leave because the competition and the rules are really intense.
The upside? Huge $$$ potential if you are prepared to "play the game" and stick it out.
The Penthouse caters to very wealthy businessmen and politicians, from Australia and around the world....

Number 52 - Penrith, Sydney (closed)

This place was massage only and was located right next door to Penrith Police Station!
Not exactly bustling with activity, but it was a good place to make a few extra $$ to help with the bills.
It was here that I had my experience of being "ripped-off" by a client - there was no "onsite management" here, so you had to look after your own takings till the "boss" came in to pick up his share at the end of shift.
I had just finished a one hour massage for a new client, and had gone to the bathroom to shower. When I came back to the room, the client was gone...and so was the money he'd just paid me, along with the money for my two previous jobs!!
(I had kept my $ in a plain paper bag under a set of drawers in my room, because I didn't trust the other girls not to steal it if I left it in the designated kitchen cupboard)
I would never put the clients money in it in front of him while he was still in the room, I'd wait till I bustled him off for a shower before we started before I put my cash "away". I suspect that it could well have been one of the other girls whom I didn't get along with that had told the client in question where to find it.
NOT a good day.

ESP - Crows Nest, Sydney (under new management now)

It looks like this place has changed a bit since I went there years ago.....
it Was quite a grubby place with grubby girls and clientele.
I stayed here for only one shift, because it just wasn't worth it at the time!

Venus - Katoomba

A very small place with only one operable "working room".
Certainly a classic case of too many cheifs and not enough indians! LoL
This place was NOT busy, hours and hours of tv watching and local gossip going on here.....
The management was split between Eric, who was a great person, reliable, friendly, supportive and kind
- and Heather, who was underhanded, bitchy behind your back, and who certainly didn't appreciate people having more fun than she was.
Talk about your ups and downs!
Not a great deal of money made here, but I had fun all the same.....

The Scarlet Lounge - Whangarei, NZ

Where do I start with this one?!
Quite frankly, this place is a shambles from start to finish.
Badly run, badly decorated, bad, bad, bad!
After years in the industry, this place still came as quite a shock!
this place is by no means upmarket in any way - from the manner of the person answering the phone, to the clientele you'll meet here.
*(please believe me - I was only here to research the industry in NZ)
I found that the place was being run by a 24 year old "boy" who had absoloutely no experience of Parlours than visiting them himself, along with a very arrogant, backstabbing manageress who loves a drink. On Duty.
The place was smelly, badly furnished, (think of your nana's bedspread & dusty plastic flowers) and only one shower between 5 rooms!
The other girls? Hmm, what can I say? No offense meant, but girls - you can do better!!
Technically, the rules are no drinking or drugs on premises, but lets say that's not really enforced, more encouraged...
On one occasion, two workmates had a blazing row over who owed who drugs
- in front of clients in the lounge
It turned into a bit of a brawl, with thankfully the only casualty being a mobile phone.
The boy-wonder manager chose to ignore these types of problems, resulting in the place not exactly being somewhere anyone with half a brain would want to work.
God knows how it manages to pass council inspections.......
*note: apparently this place has undergone some refurbishments, but the feedback is that nothing else has changed.

After the Scarlet Lounge, I began working privately, with MUCH better results......but more about that later.

So, You Want To Be A Sex Worker.....

There are a great number of things to consider if you're seriously thinking about working in the sex industry.

First and foremost - Are you physically AND mentally healthy?

The sex industry can be really tiring, (and I don't just mean regarding the actions you'll be performing!)
If you're joining a "parlour" setup, you could be working up to 12 hour shifts.
Most of your shift you might be sitting around, bored out of your brains, waiting for a client to roll in.
If you've ever, say, sat in a doctor's waiting room after arriving on time for you're appt, but the doctor is running behind and you end up waiting an hour, how does this make you feel ? agitated? restless? anxious? stressed? well just imagine that wait extending to 5 hours.......

As I'm sure you're well aware, stress can take it's toll on our health VERY quickly.

Stress comes in many different forms, and if you're working in the sex industry, there are certain stresses that you just can't avoid, such as -

Sexual Health issues- what if I catch something?
Long hours - having to be cheerful, friendly and charming to complete strangers at 4am can be a challenge for most people!
Secrecy- what if someone I know finds out?
Money worries- It's been a really slow week but I still need to pay my rent!
Other Workers- working alongside other girls has it's pro's & con's; although it can be good to build a rapport with your workmates, remember that they are your competition!
Drugs - This client I'm seeing wants me to snort some coke with him!

But, there are always ways of minimising stress.

For example-

Sexual Health Issues - make sure you ALWAYS practice safe sex, no matter HOW MUCH MONEY your client is ready to offer you to do otherwise! Also it is extremely important to have regular check-ups! If you ask other girls you're working with, you'll find out the best place to go in your area. (in most areas, sexual health clinics provide a FREE service for working girls (& boys!))

Long Hours - ensure you do some research especially if you're thinking of joining a Parlour set-up; what are the opening hours? when do shifts start & finish? Are the shifts flexible? are there fines/penalties for arriving late, or leaving early if I don't feel well, or what happens if there's a problem at home?

Secrecy - Try and find a safe place to work that's NOT too close to where you live! Your travelling time to & from work may be a little longer, but you'll have a lot more piece of mind that you're nosy gossiping neighbour isn't going to see you walking into work!

Money Worries - unfortunately, the only way to minimise money worries, is the same as for any occupation; keep a record of your spending habits. e.g: Do you really need to buy expensive take-away's while at work, or is there a kitchen where you can prepare something from home? You'll find that just by making small adjustments to how you spend, you'll have more than enough to pay your rent!

Other Workers - Although it can be really hard in an all-girl environment, try and keep your personal life out of the workplace! I'm sure I'm not the only working girl in the world that has come across fellow workmates that will try anything to "put you off you're game". If you don't involve yourself in workplace gossip, you'll find that it won't affect you!

Drugs - my advise to you regarding the use of ANY recreational drugs at work? DON'T! (in this situation it is definately ok to lie a little, especially if the client is really pushing the issue; tell him that you just had a big fat line before he got there, and you're feeling so good you don't want to overload and spoil it! I have personally witnessed numerous beautiful, intelligent fun-loving working girls who have ended up being banned from parlours and losing their children because thay ended up with very messy drug habits! If you feel that you NEED a little something to be able to do your job- perhaps it's time to rethink your profession.)

( remember - the sex industry is definately not for everyone!)

I am 34 years old (real age) and I have been a sex-worker for 17 years.
I have just retired.

You might say that I've learnt a thing or two, so I decided (with the encouragement of some old friends) to create a place on the net where working girls can find REAL advice, help, support, and even some resources to help keep you happy and healthy.

The sex industry is often not what people would ever imagine.
I'm sure you've heard the stereotypes, but honestly, it can be the most boring tedious heartwrenching isolating frustrating profession in the whole world.

I have met a huge number of other sex workers during my "career", and most of them were just your average person who usually started working in the sex industry because of money problems. Sometimes, a worker will become very successful in a very short period of time. Unfortunately, these people will usually crash and burn. Why? because it takes a lot more than just being popular to make any real money out of your job, it takes strength.

I am one of the lucky ones, at the age of 17 in the first parlour I worked at, I met a couple of very experienced professional workers, who took delight in teaching a newbie all the things they'd learnt.

These women owned their own homes, had Husbands and families, and very high incomes.

Now, at the same stage in my life, I feel a responsibility to pass on some information to today's newbies.

Yes, it takes courage to be a successful working-girl, but for the right person, the rewards can make it all worthwhile at the end of the day.......
